France! Day 11: Patisserie Artisanale

07.13.11

What? A food truck on Bd Béranger for lunch (pastries!?)
Where? Bd Béranger (today it was at the Sébastopol intersection)
Price? 0,60€-3€ (crêpe au sucre for 1,50€, triangle chocolat for 0,90€)
The skinny: This cart is present everyday and seems to be owned by a husband and wife couple. Great teamwork from them means efficient, quick, but still friendly service. If you’ve got a hankering for something sweet, on the go, and don’t want to pay much, this is where you go!

I only had time for a quick lunch today so that meant either something from Les Halles, or perhaps something from marché Béranger (weds = market day there). Béranger it is.
Yep, that's the husband waving at me :D

Of course I’m now faced with more choices! Before I had time to take everything in, the husband asked me what I wanted: “uhhhhh”. I had to decide quickly!

Alright, a slice of tomato pizza and a croissant aux amandes (almond croissant).
eek...it's got that burnt edge :(

Pizza Tomates Basilic (1,50€ la part = slice)
I was apprehensive, ordering pizza but the man heated it up for me which helped. He also gave some sort of tomato & cheese apéritif. Sure? For 1,50€, I didn’t expect a whole lot. And I guess I was right. I can taste that the ingredients were fresh-ish and the dough was light but nothing special. Can’t remember what the apéritif (aka nibble) tasted like.

Croissant au Amandes (0,90€?, not sure though)
Also got a sort of “nibble” with my croissant; this time a sweet one called a “choquette”. It was pleasant I guess…light, buttery, sweet. Prepared me well for what was to come. Dun dun dun!! Almond croissant time! :D
La Choquette

The toasted sliced almonds that topped the croissant were a great touch. The croissant itself? Well the pastry taste & texture were completely overpowered by the sugar/almond paste inside. Don’t get me wrong, it’s good but there was just too much of it. Overkill I’d say.

Here’s a little taste of my next post.

Verdict? Because of the price and the fact that most of their pastries are decent (their fruit crêpes look and smell amazing!), I’ll be returning for a snack in between classes. It’s only a 1-minute walk from school! :D
