What? Poilâne for butter cookies!
Where? 38, rue Debelleyme (3e arr, mo Filles du Calvaire, Paris)
The skinny: A family business started in 1932, Poilâne is a bakery that’s now renowned for their miche or pain Poilâne (a 2kg sourdough) and Punitions (their butter cookies). Although it started out as a single location in the Saint-Germain des Près district, it has expanded to 4 shops and a restaurant at the Le Marais location.
This location of Poilâne also has a “Cuisine de Bar,” which is in a way a light eatery.
We arrived at about 10 in the morning. Lucky us it wasn't busy! :D
Upon entering, you’re greeted with a rack upon which there are samples of their specialties. This included a relatively new product, their “Pas pour les chiens!” cookies created by Caperino & Peperone. They look so cute! Translated as “Not for dogs” but they’re bone-shaped. :D
Also, there are bread accents on a sourdough loaf forming a sort of "Welcome!" sign for the bakery
Although there were a lot of choices, I came for one thing and one thing only, les Punitions! :D
“Punition” means punishment. If I ever have a punishment where I have to eat these cookies, I’d be grinning from ear to ear. Ingredients listed are wheat flour, butter, sugar and eggs. 100% natural.
Punitions: la boîte de 125g pour 4,95€
I got a box for my brother. It was about a week until I got them home to him but the cookies held up perfectly. They’re so buttery. It’s got a crunch but it’s nice and tender too.
Verdict: I came here with one purpose, to buy butter cookies for my brother. And they tasted great! Next time I’m back, I’d like to go to the original location as well as try their sourdough. Their products are pricey though so I still can’t go crazy and try everything there.
