Where? 445 Danforth ave (1 min walk from Chester station)
The skinny: Long story short, owner Marino Dafnas’ restaurant Messini Authentic Gyros serves up probably the BEST gyros in Toronto. Located in the heart of Greektown, you’ll always find this place busy. To skip the line, order a gyro to go! ;D I promise, you won’t be disappointed!
I’ve been coming here for a few years now and have yet to post about it. I guess it’s about time? It’s just that I’m very unadventurous with the menu—what? I’ve found my favourite here and I’m sticking to it! ;D Check out the one time I had gyro in France!
|Check out those large spits of meat! Sorry, my mouth's watering right now... haha|
The restaurant’s quite narrow with only about 25-30 seats so if you don’t want to wait, take-out is the way to go. I came here to catch up with some old friends (missed them immensely! Haven’t seen two of them in years) who all shockingly haven’t been here before.
Tip: like I mentioned before, best gyro in town. To take-out, just flip to this picture, turn it over, order a gyro pita ($4.05-5; lamb/pork/chicken/mixed) and you’ll be one happy person. :D Plus, service for take-out is FAST so it’s perfect if you’re in a rush!
Some on-the-house pita and olive tapenade. I didn’t even have room to try this…it’s served warm.
All four of us ordered the “Dinner Pita Plate” ($9.25-$12.50). What you get is a gyro or souvlaki pita, a salad, and you choice of French fries / roasted potatoes / rice. I always go for the French fries. It’s so much food, you’re guaranteed to be full by the end.
Here’s the heaping bowl of salad you’re presented with. Lots of feta! YUM!
For $1 more, you can convert your simple French fries to “Greek fries”! They’re really good so if your stomach can handle it, I’d say go for it! Essentially, it’s their French fries w/ oregano and feta, put into the broiler for a bit so that the cheese begins to melt. The gyro itself—just this perfect combination of lamb + tzatziki sauce + tomato + fries + onions.
Verdict: If you haven’t been here yet, go now!!! It’s cheap and so delicious! Ps, if you want ketchup for your french fries, you gotta ask for it ;D
