Montreal: Beauty's Luncheonette

07.23.12

Continuing our food adventures in Montreal, the team and I headed over to Beauty’s Luncheonette at the corner of Mont-Royal and St-Urbain. Yes, a few of us are big Anthony Bourdain fans… :] (YAY!)
One of our friends, Rachella tagged along :D

(Here's the episode of The Layover when Anthony Bourdain was in Montreal. Watch it, it's so much fun!)

The window is plastered with dozens of newspaper clipping from over the years. Beautys is really a neighbourhood favourite and it ain’t going anywhere anytime soon.

We didn’t get there that early, maybe around 10 in the morning, and yet we were able to get seats almost immediately! I’m talking all 20 or so of us got seats…luck was on our side that morning!

Retro look on the menu. I love it.

The story of the luncheonette can be found on the back of the menu. It’s been quite the journey for founders Hymie and Freda Sckolnick. Mr. Sckolnick, now in his late 80s, still works there, EVERY single day!

Beauty’s Basic (8$)
(two eggs w/ bacon/ham/sausage, home fries, and bagel/bread). Good, honest, classic breakfast can’t be beat. Top that with a café allongé, good stuff. (Don't judge, not everyone can take espresso straight!) Beware though, if you get bread, it’ll come buttered!

This is also the Beauty’s Basic, but with eggs done sunnyside up (how perfect do they look?!), ham and homefries tucked underneath. I'm surprised neither of them got bacon...

Paper placemat. Their smoothies are HUGE. I was tempted to grab one, but knowing we still had a packed day of eating ahead of us, I held back. There’s always next time ;)

BBM – Beauty Breakfast Melt (7,50$)
This looked so good!!! One of the guys got it and he really liked it. You can never go wrong with challah bread. Sandwiched in there are eggs, cheddar, tomato and bacon/ham/salami. I’m drooling right now just thinking about it….

Pain Doré (7,50$)
I was planning on getting the special, and then my eyes landed on this. I’m a huge sucker for French toast (aunties & uncles, j'go in France). Pretty good here, but I would’ve preferred it if was “eggier”. Gimme my daily dose of cholesterol please!

There’s the option to have regular table syrup with it but we’re in Quebec! I want the real stuff! So for 2,50$, you get a teeny bottle of maply syrup. :) I didn’t use it all so the rest, I gave to a friend who was having the pancakes (which were AMAZING if you were wondering).

For what I got, I think it's a bit pricey. Knowing now what some of the menu looks and tastes like on a plate, I have a much better idea of what to get the next time I'm here...which will be in a few weeks haha :D

Verdict: Great service and atmosphere. Decent price. I’m coming back for the Special. I have yet to have a Montreal bagel with some goodies inside but I know where I wanna go the next time I’m in town, Beauty’s! Am I one of those crazy peeps who try to recreate the “Bourdain Layover/No Reservations” experience when they hit up a city that’s been featured? Maybe.
