Food markets nowadays hold so much more than your typical famer’s market produce and various jarred jams, preserves and honey. There’s such a huge variety of foods, made by people who are genuinely enthusiastic about it with pretty much all of them hoping to grow their business beyond that folding trestle table. It’s exciting to go to food markets these days! There was the underground market in San Francisco (forage) that inspired the now two-year old “Toronto Underground Market”. Since we’re in New York City, time to check out their famous food market, Smorgasburg (@smorgasburg).
Reservations: open market so nope.
Transit: directions to each location can be found on their site here
Hours: Williamsburg (Sat 11am-6pm), Pier 5 (Sun 11am-6pm), SmorgasBar (daily 11am-10pm)
The idea behind Smorgasburg is to showcase the diversity of the food available. When people think of NYC, Manhattan comes to mind, Times Square, 30 Rock, Empire State Building, Statue of Liberty etc… Brooklyn shouldn’t be an afterthought, and slowly but surely, the food scene there is gaining more attention as it should. Can’t wait to explore it more!
Of course it’s much more “live” during the summer/spring seasons when it’s outdoor at three different locations—but it’s winter and we can’t do much so they bring it indoors. Combining both the Brooklyn Flea Market and Smorgasburg (a scaled-down version of both) you get the Winter Flea/Smorg in Williamsburg (80 North 5th St)!
P.S. Smorgasburg = Smörgåsbord (Swedish buffet; so think, a little bit of everything) + Williamsburg.
The market was buzzing with a steady flow of people going in and out. Naturally, I bee lined it to the food section. As you can see here, the list of food vendors is quite extensive. And though they weren’t all present, quite a few were! It just sucks because we’d just eaten and so I wasn’t hungry. I couldn’t even stuff myself with more. :(
Old pocket books. $5 each. I found my book!! I didn’t buy it though…that’d be weird.
So many random things! At one point it just seemed like everyone was browsing, or maybe they’re looking for that one special item.
Either way, though it was cool to peruse the flea market, I think I’d much rather return to it and Smorgasburg during the summer, when it’s outdoor, with more vendors, and I will make sure to arrive on an empty stomach!
Psst! You can become a vendor as well! ;D #1. Have an amazing idea. #2. Apply online. #3. Sample brought to the Dumbo office.
