NYC! La Churreria

12.29.13
I have a few more NYC food adventures from December left to post—this one’s gonna be very very short. I hadn’t planned on taking my DSLR camera out at all this day for several reasons: a) it was the most food adventure-jammed day, meaning many quick stops for specific items, b) it was raining and I wanted to keep the camera out of the humidity, c) we were making some return trips to places I’d posted about in the past.

I made an exception for La Churreria (@lachurrerianyc) as soon as we stepped in because it’s in such a convenient location! I felt compelled to share this snack with you so when you’re in NYC shopping on Broadway, or having just grabbed a bagel and lox from Russ & Daughters, or looking for the perfect hangover cure, you’ll know where to go.

La Churreria was so warm and cozy. It’s a very narrow café with banquette seating and heavy marble-top tables. As the name suggests, they’re all about (authentic) churros here. Spanish ex-pat Jesús ‘Lolo’ Manso is the owner of this spot and Socarrat Paella Bar next door.

I read about this place, or rather saw a photo of their drool-worthy churros on Time Out’s “Best Desserts in New York City 2012”. We found time to check out the Saint Honoré from Maison Kayser (textbook, good) as listed in the 2013 slideshow.

My friend Jess and I shared Churros for 1 ($6) – 6 churros & 1 small chocolate. That’s crazy cheap. The coating (just sugar here) was a bit inconsistent but overall, we enjoyed them. They came fresh and piping hot. Perfectly crispy. The chocolate was dense and rich, coating the fried batons readily.

If you want it all, they also have filled churros. Fillings include cream, dulce de leche and dark chocolate ($3.50).

Tempted to drink the leftover chocolate...
Verdict: A must-try. La Churreria is a great place to relax. You can also snack on tapas and bikinis (no…not the two-piece you wear to the beach, the Catalonia version of croque-monsieur, a grilled ham and cheese sandwich). Just know that you won’t go wrong with the churros though! You can grab some to-go as well (sans the delicious but messy chocolate).
